A winter cover is designed primarily to keep debris out during off-season months. It's lighter (550-750 g/m²) and typically secures with a cable and winch system around the pool perimeter. A safety cover is load-rated (900-1050 g/m²) and meets ASTM F1346 — it can support the weight of a child or adult who falls onto it. Safety covers use spring anchors and webbing straps embedded into the pool deck, not perimeter cables. Safety covers are approximately 2-3x the cost of winter covers due to the heavier fabric and anchoring hardware.
For rectangle pools: measure length and width at the widest points, then add 60-90 cm overhang per side. For oval/kidney pools: measure the longest length and widest width. For above ground pools: measure the outside diameter (round) or length × width (oval/rectangle). The cover should overlap the pool edge by at least 30 cm. For automatic covers with Keder rail: measure the rail-to-rail distance (track width).
